100 years of Dannecker Expertise in One Harp: The Dannecker Blues Lex™
Since it’s launch in 2002 the Dannecker Blues™ has become one of the most respected harmonicas the world over and is used both in and out of the recording studio by celebrated professional harmonica musicians worldwide.
For many years harmonica manufacturers have sought an alternative material to wood for a harmonica comb which would replicate that traditional mellow tone of the old time blues players. Right up until the 1970's blues harmonicas were traditionally wooden combed instruments. During these early years the disadvantages of wooden combed instruments caused problems to many blues players with wooden combs swelling when wet and then cutting the lips whilst playing. A myriad of of DIY methods were employed such as, sealing the wooden comb with wax, lacquer etc. to try to prevent this from happening. Regretfully, the tonal characteristics of the harp were affected essentially dulling and flattening the sound. Since the advent of moulded plastics harmonica combs were then developed which were impervious to moisture and therefore the problems associated with wooden combed instrument were eliminated. Unfortunately, these inexpensive hollow 'plastic' combs offered very little in the way of tonal enhancement.
It was not until Hohner launched an exceptional collector series luxury chromatic harmonica called the Amadeus whose comb was milled from a solid piece of Lexan (plexiglass) offering all the warmth of wood without the warp.
Building upon the success of the Dannecker Blues harmonica Antony experimented with prototype blues harmonica combs milled from the same material. As anticipated, a beautifully mellow sound was achieved again offering the warmth of wood without the warp. Crafted to fit the Dannecker Blues series the Lex has now been launched with huge success.
